GPSGlobal Positioning System Common Infos
GPS is a satellite-based radionavigation system developed and operated
by the U.S. Department of
Defense. GPS permits all users free of charge to determine their
three dimensional position any time, any weather, anywhere in the
world. The russian counterpart of GPS is GLONASS. You rarely get receivers which support GLONASS. The U.S. Coast
Guard Navigation Center provides interesting informations about the
current status and plans of the GPS (2001-10-01). The precision of GPS for civilian use is about 20 metres since the SA (selective availability) was turned off on May, 2nd 2000. Garmin GPS 12XLPersonally I own my second Garmin
GPS 12XL. The first one (bought aroung 1997) was not waterproof as
advertised and filled with water during a heavy tropical rain shower in
Antigua while sailing. Garmin replaced it free of charge with the newer
hardware revision and this unit seems to be really waterproof. Changes: Thomas Hopfner, 01.10.2001: Created page |
